01 · FROM THE NOVEL

A teacher watches people

Wu Yong is a learned teacher and a friend of Chao Gai. He has no need to be the largest fighter in the room. His work begins with finding out who can do what, which story someone will believe, and where a guarded person might lower their guard.

His nickname, Zhi Duo Xing, is often translated as Resourceful Star. Liangshan will need that resourcefulness to turn individual talents into coordinated action. But even his early success depends on keeping someone else in the dark.

02 · FROM THE NOVEL

Wine on Huangni Ridge

A convoy is carrying a valuable birthday tribute to the powerful official Cai Jing. Yang Zhi commands the escort. He knows that thieves will be watching and drives his men hard through the heat.

On Huangni Ridge, the carriers are thirsty and resentful. A group of date merchants rests nearby. A wine seller arrives. Yang Zhi suspects drugged wine and forbids his men to buy it.

The merchants drink first. There is an argument with the seller, some conspicuous handling of a ladle, and an apparently convincing demonstration that the wine is safe. The convoy party watches all of it. These are the very sights Wu Yong wants them to see: the merchants and seller are his accomplices, and the sleeping drug is introduced within the performance.

The men press to drink. Yang Zhi gives way and takes a little himself. When they wake, the tribute is gone. Wu Yong’s plan has worked; Yang Zhi’s hoped-for recovery of his career has collapsed.

03 · OUR READING OF THE STORY

The other side of a clever ending

Read this heist beside Yang Zhi’s story. The same empty road holds a brilliant victory for one man and a ruinous failure for another. The trick is entertaining partly because we know more than its victim does.

Later schemes recruit Xu Ning and Lu Junyi by closing their routes home. Wu Yong’s cleverness keeps the brotherhood growing. It also asks us to look past the satisfying moment when a plan comes together and notice who has been left without a choice.

A QUESTION TO CARRY WITH YOU
Does a plan’s success justify its methods?

What part of Wu Yong’s story stays with you?

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Reading Wu Yong.

What is the birthday tribute heist?

It is the theft of a convoy of valuables intended as birthday gifts for Cai Jing. Wu Yong organizes the deception that defeats Yang Zhi’s security precautions.

Does Wu Yong always recruit people willingly?

No. Several schemes remove a prospective recruit’s alternatives. Xu Ning and Lu Junyi show why Liangshan’s growth cannot be described entirely as voluntary fellowship.

ABOUT THIS RETELLING

Written by Liangshan Lore, based on Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan), traditionally attributed to Shi Nai’an. The novel follows an outlaw brotherhood in a fictionalized Song-dynasty setting. It is literature, not a record of each character’s historical life.

Chapter references below follow the 120-chapter Chinese edition. Other editions and English translations differ in chapter numbering, names, and endings. These are original English summaries, not quotations from a modern translation. The reflection above is our interpretation. Artwork is a concept illustration.
